Sustainability

Refuge City strives to be self-sufficient in its operations with the goal of achieving long-term stability in program execution. It is important for us to manage our resources well and build without incurring debt. In addition, we are aware of the importance of the environment and the need to preserve it. We are committed to doing our part in the local community by being models in the stewardship and integrity of financial and natural resources.

100% Debt Free

Ciudad Refugio is 100% debt-free. We are committed to delivering our programs and services to the community in the most sustainable way possible, without incurring debt or spending beyond the means provided.

Solar Panels

The Ciudad Refugio solar initiative provides electricity to operate the foundation's programs throughout the day. Our goal with this project is to reduce energy costs and, over time, have the ability to sell energy to the local government, because the more we save, the more we can invest in people. The initiative and implementation of solar panels in the sustainability of a building is something innovative in the city of Medellín, which has caught the attention of local media and educational institutions.

Mobile Phone Antenna

Ciudad Refugio is one of the tallest buildings in the community, which is of interest to certain companies, including cell phone companies. Recognizing this, we rent the top floor of our facility to a local cell phone provider as another local source of sustainable revenue for the implementation of the foundation's programs.

Revenue-generating projects cover 60% of the operating costs of existing programs.

Income Generating Projects

Income-generating projects are key to the long-term sustainability of Ciudad Refugio. In addition to financial resources, the projects also generate job training and potential employment opportunities for the people who participate in our programs.

The Refuge Restaurant and Cafe

The restaurant and café “El Refugio” offers baked goods, desserts, roast chicken, and lunches to the local community at reduced prices. This project is run and operated by residents and program volunteers. 100% of the proceeds go directly to Ciudad Refugio programs

Hands that Work

Manos que obran is a Ciudad Refugio work initiative project that builds productive relationships with local businesses and factories. Organizations send us work contracts and the foundation provides the “working hands.”

Recycling

In partnership with Fricar, a local meat company, Ciudad Refugio recycles 1,000 kilos of cardboard weekly. Fricar donates the cardboard and Ciudad Refugio keeps 100% of the revenue generated by its sale.
